My sixth grade students are required to complete a science fair project. The primary purpose of the project is to develop the student's critical thinking abilities as well as involve him/her in the investigation process of science. The concept of the scientific process is part of the sixth grade curriculum. Its emphasis is due to the fact that eighth grade students are required to pass FCAT-Science 2.0. Twenty-five percent of this test is based on the scientific method. It is important for students to master this concept. Therefore, I am requiring a science fair project of each student. A science fair project allows the student an opportunity to study a subject of individual interest and put the scientific method to use. The student will be tasked with selecting and planning a project, performing an investigation and analyzing his/her data to arrive at a conclusion. Such projects not only help students improve their organizational and time management skills but also help to develop their public speaking skills. Students will present their projects to their fellow students and/or judges. The project will consist of a short research report using the scientific method for the experiment and display board. Several class periods will be devoted to the discussion of the requirements for both the research report and the display board. Students will have the opportunity to use our school library/technology class for research and work on design principles of their display board in art class. When completing the research portion of the project, it would also be helpful to use your local public library due to the number of students expected to participate in the fair and the availability of the research material. Most of the experimental work, display board, and research paper should be completed at home.
The research report will be handed in first for a grade. The completed display board and log book will be due on 12/6/15
Students will present their display boards to the class 12/6, 12/7, 12/8. Students will receive the Science Fair format at the start of each phase that will be kept in student's Science Notebook in the Science Fair tab. It will include timelines to help them keep track of their progress and project requirements. Please review it with your child so that you are both aware of the timelines for completing particular requirements.
Official Science Fair forms concerning your awareness of this project will need to be signed by the parent overseeing the project and returned to me. If you have any questions throughout this project, please contact me
